Butterfly Project - Hosted by Craft Critique

I've heard of the Butterfly Project before - a totally worthy cause! Craft Critique is collecting handmade butterflies to send to the Butterfly Project. I'm just sharing this here with all of you charity minded papercrafters because maybe while you're waiting for a plane, sitting by the pool, riding in the car, or just watching TV you can throw some scraps together to create a butterfly to send. Here's all the info, pasted from Craft Critique's blog:

We are on vacation here at Craft Critique, celebrating our American Independence. Rather than being stagnant this week, we thought we'd give something back, and reach out to our readers, asking you to take time over this summer to do something special for someone else.

There are so many deserving causes out there... it was difficult for us to select one. Then on July 10th, our cause came to light, when a gunman walked into the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington , D.C. and opened fire.

Crimes of hate are devastating. I believe that the Holocaust Memorials around the globe serve as sacred places where we are reminded of humanity's darkest times so we can be sure actions of hate, ignorance and apathy are never again perpetrated against a group of people.

More than 1,500,000 innocent children were murdered during the Holocaust. In an effort to remember them, the Holocaust Museum of Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies. The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition, currently scheduled for Spring 2012, for all to remember.

Craft Critique would like to send a box of butterflies as one large gift to the museum. We encourage you to share this project with your friends, families, students and children... and to take some time out of your busy summer to make one or more butterflies for the museum.

Please Note:

  • Butterflies should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.
  • Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but two-dimensional submissions are preferred.
  • Glitter should not be used.
  • Food products (cereal, macaroni, candy, marshmallows or other perishables) also should not be used..
  • Place your butterfly in a Ziplock Bag with your name and address.
Mail your Butterflies no later than September 15th, 2009 to:

Craft Critique
Attn: Butterfly Project
649 N. Spring Street
Elgin, IL 60120

You can read more about the Butterfly Project and access teaching tools HERE.

And this week we will be bringing some simple and beautiful butterfly crafts to help inspire you.

Thank you for participating and have a wonderful Independence day!

The Butterfly

The last, the very last,
So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.

Perhaps if the sun’s tears would sing
against a white stone....
Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly ’way up high.

It went away I’m sure
because it wished to kiss the world good-bye.
For seven weeks I’ve lived in here,

Penned up inside this ghetto.

But I have found what I love here.

The dandelions call to me

And the white chestnut branches in the court.

Only I never saw another butterfly.

That butterfly was the last one.

Butterflies don’t live in here, in the ghetto.

Feeding Our Communities

This past weekend Fiskateers and Scrapbook Royalty collected non-perishable food items for those in need at various locations across Southern California. Here are some of their stories:

From Cheryl Waters, Lead Fiskateer, at the Orange County Rescue Mission:

Wow . . . what a fantastic and impacting day Saturday was as we collected food for the hungry during our Fiskateer food drive. I spent most of the day at the Orange County Rescue Mission in Tustin. It was a day of watching the local fiskateer community make a difference in their community. I was so excited to see fiskateers and their generosity! It was fantastic.

First came Tanya and her family. Her two boys are darling and so wonderful to know she is setting an example for them. Tanya and her family made it a family event and that was awesome to see. Then Cori arrived about the same time as well as Michelle and her son. Cori even brought items that were packaged in orange. It was awesome to see the fiskateers show up in orange and the OC Rescue Mission residents started to recognize the fiskateers as the day progressed . . . those in orange. It was neat that fiskateers had an opportunity to meet each other. Here is a photo we took together.

Michelle decorated this beautiful bag! What talent and you could really tell she created it with love. I loved the message it shared! It really warmed the residents/students hearts and it was displayed throughout the whole day. As the day concluded one of the gals asked if she could keep it and take it to her room as it really encouraged her. They emptied the contents of the bag, separated the food and she was the proud owner of this beautiful created bag by fiskateer #915. It was neat to see how the folks there were touched.

I was so encouraged as I heard testimonies of how the OC Rescue Mission was providing opportunities and hope for those involved. I didn’t take photos of those working/staying on campus as I wanted to respect their privacy. Some of them have recently lost their homes and belongings and are struggling financially because of the recent economical situation. Others have struggled for years with different issues but all seemed to really find hope at this place. I was so blessed working along side these individuals for the day. We all have seasons where we need to receive and other seasons where we can give. I enjoyed learning a lot about the mission and the great work that is going on there. There is a lot of opportunity at the Mission. I must say as well, they sure are organized.

Others that gave included Susan, Laurie R. and her girls at the crop in the city of Orange, Anita, and others. It was a successful day and a great way to conclude our Fiskateer food drive.

I am looking into the possibility of teaching a class there at the OC Rescue Mission as a lot of the ladies seem very interested. I’m excited about the opportunity.

Remember too that the mission is open during the week for drop off. So although we are concluding our Fiskateer Food Drive there are still opportunities to give.

Elena, Maxine and others were in their own corner of the world collecting and greeting fiskateers. You are a generous and giving community! Thank you for being you. You are making a great difference! Keep up the wonderful work.

From Jennifer Priest, collecting for Victor Valley Christian Church Food Bank:

We also collected canned food for Victor Valley Christian Church's Food Bank as part of the Fiskateers' and Scrapbook Royalty's "Feed Our Communities" Food Drive this past weekend. I helped collect 180 items of food over the last two weeks!! WOOHOO!! I just had Xaver and Katie count them. Check out this pile in my front room:

I am taking it all to the food bank later this week ;) I am sure they need it and this will help alot of hungry families. Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

One Box Returns, Another One Is Sent

Imagine how sad it was for Elena to check Scrapbook Royalty's mail only to find that some of the Father's Day cards that many of us handcrafted for the troops had been returned! It was too late to send them to another set of soldiers overseas so we figured we'd just have to wait until next year to send them.

A few days later Elena received an email from Lenora Weigand, a mother wanting to send her son and other fathers serving overseas Father's Day cards from their children and families here. Woohoo! Elena sent Lenora the cards, which the families in her son's unit sent to their fathers overseas. Here is a note from Lenora:

Elena -

Just wanted to send you a separate note and say thank you again. Your kindness and love of our servicemen and women (my Son) touches my heart and I thank you. . . I volunteer at the USO and hope to deploy to Afghanistan soon with the USO. Knowing that there are individuals out there such as yourself who love their country and support our Troops tangibly is priceless! KNOW that what you are doing does touch lives! I have attached a photo of my son for you. Again, many many thanks!

What we all do through Scrapbook Royalty really does touch lives. It is so fortunate that we were still able to use these cards for those who are serving our country. Thanks so much for supporting SBR and the causes we help--without you we would not be a success and could not make the impacts we are making. Thank you!
