Last Live Streaming at CHA

Journal wording reads Charity Wings (Charitywings.org) had a Live Streaming Event at CHA in Los Angeles at the beginning of 2011. Now, since I am getting excited about being there for a repeat of the fun next week in Chicago; I reviewed some photos of the last CHA and decided that they were definitely worthy of a scrap layout.

Watching Elena as she pulls this production together is great fun. I'm handicapped, so, I cannot offer manpower; but, I can occasionally run an errand on my scooter (and try not to run folk over).

Getting to see all the new "stuff" up close and personal and reviewing the product with the designers and manufacturers is a very special experience. The format of offering this experience to all who contribute to the charity effort, by live streaming the event, is terrific.

I did spend a little time at the Westcott booth where folk made donations and created duck tape fashions. Such creative and fun folk attend CHA. It was great fun to meet them!

Thanks for stopping by to see our projects today! I loved the photos from our last photo prompt so much, that I decided to use some of my favorite scrapbooks papers to create a 12x12 layout.....

When I went to make my layout, I really liked how clean the lines looked before I adhered everything together so this ended up being the first layout I've done without sewing in I don't know how long : ) To take advantage of this I mounted my photo onto chipboard so they would have a little bit of lift. And to add even more depth, there are pop-up foamies under the heart border on the right and also the square love journaler.....

.....So pretty much this layout is most of the items below all layered together in the center of my paper. And here are all the individual pieces I used (the Hambly Overlay and Prima Pearls are from the lovely Color Me Miki shop).....

This layout ended up being so special to me, that it is now displayed in my living room safely encased (and protected from the doggies) in a black 12x12 photo box : )

happy project monday!!, when making a layout for this picture, I knew I wanted neutral colors with a pop of color! All the perfect papers and trims were in the march kit *redemption song* from Pink Ninja Addicts! I love how the turquoise paper "pops" in the background, and it has a hint a brown to blend in with the background. It came out simple, but perfect for me!! hope you have a happy creative day!!

The Happiest Expo on Earth!!!

I've almost recovered from our time in Anaheim this weekend at the first Scrapbook Expo of the year! If you didn't already know, Charity Wings is hosting the crops at all 13 Scrapbook Expo's this year. Add to that a rocking, fun filled booth with I must say the best Make and Take at the Expo, and a very special guest Suzi Blu! I just love spending time with Suzi, she is so talented, she makes me want to create fun art! Which is how it should be, art should be from the heart and soul and it should make you smile and want to create more art!

We used these awesome new products by Faber Castel, my favorite were the Watercolor Color Pencils. It's like Crayola Color Pencils gone wild! We used Suzi Blu's little petite doll stamps by Unity Stamps and these cool canvas tags by Maya Road.

We had 2 fantastic give aways going and I know the folks out there who participated are just dying to know if they won or not so I won't lead them on much longer.

I would like to take a moment and thank the wonderful volunteers who helped us out at the Expo over the weekend! They really are the heart of Charity Wings, without their help we could not function!

I would also like to thank all of the vendors that were so generous and donated items for the raffles each night for the crops. We were able to raise over $2,500.00for 2 really great charities. I'll get Elena to post their info.

The crops were a lot of fun, Friday and Saturday night I have to say the highlight for me was the Westcott Scissor Dance Off, this is new to the crops this year, we got the ladies up and shaking their...well you know what they were shaking and we gave away lots of great products from Westcott!

Both nights we also awarded 4 lucky people with either an ecraftwell machine or a Kodak Scanner Printer!
I have to say the prizes and raffles were just awesome!

Christy Tomlinson—Brave Girl, Collage Artist, Business Owner (and a giveaway)

You’ve heard me write about the Brave Girls Club on this blog. I had the opportunity to go to Brave Girls Camp in July 2010, and one of the most amazing things about BGC is the women you meet. Although Christy Tomlinson wasn’t at the July camp, I already feel I know her personally through the group of Brave Girls on Facebook.

Christy owns Scarlet Lime scrapbook kit club, Scarlet Lime Bead Art and she has recently added a wonderful mixed media art section to her Scarlet Lime kit store.

For the last several months, I have been watching Christy post some beautiful collage art pieces on her blog and on her Facebook page. She is a very talented collage artist and she loves sharing her talent through tutorials and online classes. Christy has agreed to giveaway one spot in her She Art Workshop that starts next week but more on that later in the post.

A review of Live at CHA

On my personal blog, I raved about my experience in taking part in CHA through Charity Wings. I thought my enthusiasm for the weekend was unique and too silly to share with you all. However, the adorable Julie Cooper-Hraynyk has since confirmed that I'm not the only overly enthused nut. Ha!

Julie shared a few of her thoughts and actually stated that the

experience was more than [she] ever expected!

"I signed in, focused like I was about to take three days of intense classes. After logging in I suddenly realized I was in a chat room full of nurturing ladies who all shared the same passion for crafting as I do.

Shortly our moderators and volunteers joined the room, coming online to introduce themselves, the countdown started for the beginning of our event. We were all so excited, sharing stories and showing things we had made. Some showing their studios and others introducing their families.

Once Elena came on the screen she was so energetic, wanting everything to be perfect for all of us,

some of the time there was more than 100 of us all in the chat room at one time.

This didn't fluster Elena or the moderators and volunteers at all. We met so many "celebrities". At times we were awestruck and speechless. Vendors came on screen to show us new products and how to use them, then they were generous enough to give us a chance to win the new products as well as donating a second set to be posted as a silent auction on eBay to raise money for the wonderful charity, Crops Of Love.

I was so touched to know that I was able to be a part of this. It opens your heart to realize that what you give can do so much for others.

I learned so much from the vendors, got to see generosity first hand, was given the chance to help raise money for charity via silent auctions and last but not least I made friends with people from all over the states, as well as Australia.

I can not wait to join in on another event with Charity Wings."

Julie also mentioned that she had never made a card before this webcast! I was so shocked to see people say things like that...but then again, I know ther are many crafty things that I haven't yet attempted myself.

The first card Julie made was one inspired and demoed by Nikki Sivils. She was super sweet and great at inspiring all of us to use the samples to our own liking.

I guess Julie was so inspired by how quick it is to make a card because she made another card that weekend using the Prima flowers and paper.

Great job, Julie!!!!!!! Hope you will only continue to be inspired to try something new, but I understand how it great it feels to do something like this when you're also benefiting a great cause like Crops of Luv!

Did you participate in Live at CHA. Well, if you did, you already know that many, many items were donated by designers and manufacturers to benefit Crops of Luv!!! Charity Wings is selling those items on eBay.

Time…Where Does It Go?

Lately I have been busy….like crazy busy. As a mother of 2 babies (ages 3 months and 2 years), wife (of -among other things – a high school wrestling coach), homemaker, assistant to Brave Girls Club and everything else I do, I am always running from one thing to the next – appointments, wrestling meets, breakfast, lunch and dinner, diapers, laundry, work. At any given time I have a handful of things I could give my attention to. In the last few weeks I’ve felt exhausted by it…unable to get ahead or even feel like I have a handle on all of the important things going on. I’ve got to prioritize and that’s a hard job – figuring out which is MOST important from a list of important things.

It wasn’t always like this…I mean thinking back…when I was a kid there wasn’t much to prioritize and if there was I didn’t know it because it was all done for me. As far as I was concerned at that age, all 24 hours in the day belonged to me. They were mine to do whatever I wanted with…no worries about anyone else. My mom woke me up for breakfast and got me to school, fed me lunch and dinner and tucked me into bed at night. The rest of the day was wide open with possibilities for coloring, building sand castles, jumping rope, playing house and really anything else me, my sister and our imaginations could come up with.

Fast forward a few years and I decided to take on some responsibility and get a job while I was in high school. In other words for the first time in my life I made the decision to take a few of the hours that belonged to me and give them to something else. And it felt good, and grown up and like the right thing to do and the right step to take. I still had LOTS of hours left over for myself and as the years went on and I left high school for college, time for myself increased. I moved out and soon all 24 hours in the day were mine – to choose who and where to allot them.

Somewhere in college I met a boy…I mean I met lots of boys…but I met one boy who stood out from all the others. It didn’t take long (and certainly didn’t take a conscious decision) to start giving all of my extra hours to him. Pretty soon we shared more of my hours than I took for myself and a few months down the road, when he asked me, I made the choice to keep him in my life – to always have time for him and for us.

Fast forward to today and we have made the choice to have 2 babies…babies who require time in order to be cared for and to feel loved. And as you know from the beginning of my post there are a million other things I have my time going toward. I have no doubt you are the same way.

The time has come for me to really prioritize…maybe it’s time for me to cut things out all together…maybe you feel the same way. Because we only get 24 hours in a day…a hard lesson we’ve all learned is that sometimes we just don’t have time for everything we’ve said “yes” to. And that’s okay! As long as we are saying “yes” to the right things…the BEST things…and “no” to the things that aren’t going to matter as much in the long run.

In my journey to figure out where to put my time, I am learning that I can only do one or two things at the same time REALLY well. The time that belongs to my children should REALLY belong to them. They deserve it, and I deserve it AND they are the choice I made. That means that the time that belongs to them is theirs…they don’t have to share it with work…except housework, but that’s important for them and it’s not all the time.

The point is…they get some of the time just for them.

My husband gets some of my time.

My home gets some of my time…for my peace…for my family’s peace.

Meals get some of my time because it’s important for me to feed my family healthy, thoughtful food.

I get some of my time…to recharge…to exercise…to be alone with my thoughts…to sleep.

My job gets some of my time.

BUT here’s the big one…once all of our 24 hours are gone, they’re gone. As much as we wish for some time bank where we can make unlimited withdrawals, there isn’t one. I say “we” because I’m sure you’ve wished for the same. Until we realize that our time is limited, it’s easy to spend a few “extra” hours on this or that. But there are no bonus hours, there are no free or extra hours. There are 24 hours. That’s all we get, and we have to decide where they belong and who/what to give them to.

If I want to give more time to my job, I have to take it from somewhere it’s already been allotted, which doesn’t seem like a big deal (and once in a while it probably isn’t a big deal) until I think about those hours as the ones I’ve already promised to my babies or to my husband or to our peaceful home. Am I willing to take my time from them and give it to my JOB? I’ve done that…unintentionally like I’m sure you have…and let me tell you, it doesn’t make anyone happy.

So Jackson time belongs to Jackson – not to the computer or the vacuum or the toilet brush and Lydia time belongs to her and to her snuggles. And work time is for work and if I am going to decide to give time to work, then I’ve got to do that without taking from anything or anyone else. And once the time is gone…it’s gone. Maybe before all the hours are gone, we should really think about where we are putting them….and where we are taking them from.

It is such a delicate balance, but we can do it. We might have to cut things out – so let’s do it!! Things that are robbing our time…people who are robbing our time. Things and people that are good, but aren’t the BEST things for us to give our time to. I can do it, you can do it. Let’s prioritize…let’s give 100% of our time, attention and energy intentionally. Let’s give our time to the people and things that mean the very most to us and leave the rest for someone else (or no one else…that would be okay too).

Thanks Kallie! This is beautifully said and a real lesson for all women. I met Kallie and Jackson (Lydia wasn’t quite here yet) at Brave Girls Camp in July. I have to tell you that Jackson doesn’t always look a little unhappy. He was almost always happy even among over 25 women that he didn’t even know!!!

snOMG 2011 in Chicago...now what?

Well...it's official....the Chicago Blizzaster has hit! It's almost midnight here in Chicago and this is what I see outside my window. We've experienced something called Thundersnow (unreal!) which I don't ever recall having witnessed before.

Yup....the snow is really piled up that high and this beast has just picked up steam!

So what does this mean for me tomorrow ? Thankfully, I can (and have to) work from home tomorrow. I'm guessing a good chunk of my team, if not all, will be home tomorrow so there won't be a lot of communicating. This could even get more problematic if the power goes out - eek!

So I'm snowed in...what shall I do?

CREATE!!!!

Having spent the weekend with so many of you, I've been able to see the coolest new and upcoming products and I've been inspired. I also can't wait to hear about how much we were able to raise for Crops of Luv! A lot of items were put for auction on eBay to continue benefiting Crops of Luv...so make sure to stop my and submit some bids. There is some super cool stuff on there! I'll gladly take any donations :)

I also just officially joined Club Royalty. I know, I know....bad blogger Nubia! I should have signed up ages ago! But in doing so, I got to see some of the cool initiatives that they just shared...so I'm definitely gonna catch up and make some cards for that. Maybe that's where I'll start tomorrow!

The fourth cycle of Club Royalty is starting now and it’s FREE for the next three months. It’s our gift to you!!!

Are you a charitable crafter? What is a charitable crafter? A charitable crafter is someone who loves to create handmade objects for someone in need. Simple as that. Are you in!

For the first project of this cycle, we are making Valentine cards for Card Cupid. Card Cupid will be gathering handmade Valentine cards to be given to kids at The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel.

Live at CHA Update

I’ll tell ya’ what! Elena continues to amaze me with updates about our Live at CHA event! I mentioned in the last CHA blog post about our wonderful swag bags but now Elena tells me that we are getting a free Make-N-Take from the people at Flower Soft.

Yes, I said Flower Soft. They are the people that bring you pretty little sprinkles to add to your flowers to give them beautiful, soft dimension. They will be giving a pot of this magic along with a tube of glue by Duncan and they will be hosting a live demonstration from the showroom floor on how to use the items they are adding to the swag bag!

I hear the Make-N-Take thing is going to be awesome. It will be streamed live from the showroom floor. You can work on your own project from home while you chat with everyone else from their homes. Then, if you want to show off your project, just raise your hand and they’ll turn the cameras on you. (Hopefully I will have figured out how to use my webcam by then. *giggle*)

You will be able to chat with industry leaders and designers that are attending CHA! There will be giveaways from manufacturers if you are in the chat room!

Live at CHA Volunteers Needed

Remember this post and this one, about Charity Wings Live at CHA event. We could use a few volunteers to help us out on January 29, 30 and 31.

We have four areas that we need help with:

ONSITE Volunteers:

You would work at the Charity Wings booth handing out brochures and greeting attendees.
Help with Make-n-Takes and greet attendees at the Wescott booth guiding .
Walk the floor with Elena assisting Elena with networking.

ONLINE Volunteers:

Work four hour shifts moderating the internet room - shifts will also require checking attendees against sign-up lists and insuring they have paid to be there.

IMPORTANT! CHA is a BIG event! Any of the shifts onsite will require a lot of standing and walking. If you have any health issues that my cause you discomfort while performing physical activities, the best way to help is by being a moderator for the online events. All online moderators need to have a good internet connection and capable of being online for the entire four hour shift. (Of course, you can step away quickly to use the restroom, etc.!)

Seaside Soiree Day One

Yes, our first annual Seaside Soiree was a hit...a huge success...totally awesome! That's what we are hearing from the ladies who attended this special event last weekend.

We began our exciting Charity Wings Seaside Soiree adventure on a cool, Friday night at the Oceanside Marina Suites in Oceanside California. Our suites were right on the water in the harbor. We were no less than 15 feet from the water's edge. And, when I say suites, I mean gorgeous two bedroom, two bath apartments with full kitchen, dining and living rooms.

Ladies from all over the country came to California for the first annual Seaside Soiree and they were not disappointed.

The building just beyond the pool was our home base for classes, meals and general girl time.

Registration began at 3:00 with Maria

Immediately we were presented with gifts. We received gifts all throughout the event. These darling totes were stamped by Amy Geller, Charity Wings Volunteer Coordinator, with the Birthday Elena Mermaid, created by Suzi Blu. They were embellished with beautiful handmade flowers. Inside the tote were awesome tools for us to use in our classes,

donated by Westcott. They support all our event with scissors and cutting tools! Please ask for them when you are in a craft store like Michael's or Jo Anns!

Our first class was a sea shelled, collaged frame taught by Miss Vicki.

Some examples of the beautiful work our artists created. We each made two frames. One of the frames was signed and donated to an auction. We bid on each other's frames and, of course, the highest bidder took home a piece of art that another person made.

It's not an official party without our very own Princess Elena Etcheverry looking oh so

glamorous in her very elegant tutu.

Holiday Kindness

Do you have your Christmas shopping done? If your like me, you don’t and you don’t really want to go out to the mall. I live in a city (Boise, Idaho) where the greater area population is close to 400,000 people and we have one mall. Can you believe that? At this time of year you don’t even want to go near there!!!

So, how about we make our trip to the mall a dual purpose. Let’s spread some kindness while we’re shopping. Just before Thanksgiving, the Brave Girls Club issued a Words of Kindness Challenge. What better time to spread truth and kindness than during the holiday season.

Print out these messages and pass them out while you are shopping. You won’t believe the responses you get. When I see someone walking down the isle, obviously preoccupied, I’ll hand them one of these beautiful truths. You can see in there eyes that it was just the thing the needed to make there day.

Right now (literally), I can!

I'm baking some cookies for the office holiday potluck tomorrow and boy does it have me inspired to make some quick homemade holiday cards. Considering it's 10p here in Chicago, I'm probably crazy for starting right now, but I think I can do it. I only have to make about 20.

By now, I'm sure that you are all getting pretty bored with Christine and I writing about all sorts of possibilities that you should consider as your next cause.

So, I'd like to pass the mic to you!

As I have mentioned before, a group of friends and I hosted a crafty friendraiser for a friend battling a serious illness (a form of leukemia usually seen in children). We made holiday cards to sell at our dance studio (where we all met) and raised $950! I still can't believe we were able to pull that off.

The sales started to slowly dwindle as we saturated the students with cards over the week, so we've had to halt sales for now.

Soooooo.....we are thinking of what our next step should be.

I'm turning to you...what have been some relatively easy events/activities that you have done this past year that our group should consider? Our goal is to spend as little money as possible so that almost all (if not all) the proceeds go to our friend who will be undergoing treatments for the next half a year.

I'm basically asking for an early holiday gift from you all. Help me package my urge to help into a wonderful present!

I promise to then post up some of the comments received as a form of inspiration, as I know we'll all soon start to plan our New Years' resolutions!

Have you ever wondered what Club Royalty is all about. I know I have so, here’s the scoop!

Club Royalty is all about charity, crafting and sharing. Its about using our creative endeavors to tie them all together. It’s a club of Charitable Crafters!

Here is how it works:

Charity. For each 3 month cycle, you are given 3 Charitable Challenges—one each month. The challenges will vary and might be something like:

Taking blankets to a homeless shelter
Making handmade cards for the troops overseas
Taking flowers to a nursing home to cheer up their lobby

Crafting. What better way to remember your charitable deeds than to create something about your experience. You can share photos or journal about your experience and then create something to document your charitable act.

How about creating a scrapbook page, quilt, video, collage, etc. They skies the limit!!!

Sharing. If you would like, you can share your creations with the club. You can upload a photo of your creation to the gallery. The amazing manufacturers, artists and scrapbook stores that support Scrapbook Royalty have donated some amazing prizes to be given away each month! We will randomly choose as many winners as we can!

There will be lots of other perks.

Special manufacturer discounts just for members.
Special video tutorials from amazing artists when they share their charitable acts and their creations.
An online forum on the SBR website just for Club Royalty members to connect, share their stories and encourage each other's volunteer efforts.

So Much to be Thankful for!

Leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday season, I know that many of us spent time thinking about all the wonderful things we should be thankful for this past year.

In my home, one area that is often taken for granted is saluting our troops for keeping us safe. This isn't done intentionally...it's just that there aren't any current family members in the service, so there isn't a constant reminder for the security I take for granted.

However, there are many people on this blog and in my life who help remind people like me. Alex Graywolfe was kind enough to share details with us about a Cards for Troops effort. Check this out!!!

She writes...

I had a wonderful time picking up the cards for the troops from my mailbox by proxy of my husband, as I am in a cast right now. It took the cards quite some time to arrive, and I started to worry as the end date was coming close. After reaching out to Elena, the packages started to arrive. I hadn't told my husband about what I had volunteered to coordinated, so his first words were: "How much did these cost?!"

Once the initial shock was over and I had explained the situation, he thought this was a very cool idea especially since he used to be in the military himself. So then he started checking the mail daily!

Boxes and boxes of cards kept arriving!!!!

I didn't pull them out of the boxes until I knew they were all here in my house, so that I could count and box up these beautiful creations of love at one time.

I took one night off from scrapbooking and chatting online and grabbed all the boxes and put them out on my coffee table. I then started counting and sorting by size. I counted over 400 cards. My husband was amazed. It was also incredible that we couldn't take one picture of all the cards at once because there were simply too many!

The variety of styles was touching and inspiring. I know that when these reach all of the families, they are going to be touched by the spirit of the holidays and know that they are not alone in the love they have for the men and women who are spending these and many other holidays away from home.

I know that this is just one small day in the life of a soldier and their family...not to mention all of the days that they will miss such as christmases and anniversarys, babies being born to first steps and birthdays.

But these small 4.5 x 5.5 inch pieces of paper we call christmas cards are going to make one big memory for these famlies this year.

Also, don't forget that Christine posted information on MISSION VALENTINE in a previous blog post to help make another holiday extra special for our troops. Cards must be sent by December 1st.

A little bit about me

As Christine had previously mentioned, she and I are the new blog writers for Scrapbook Royalty. It's been a lot of fun to take on this role as I have been inspired and motivated to take on my own crafting for a cause effort. (Quick update: In 5 days of cards sales, we've raised $900 to benefit my friend and her family).

I'm not very good about writing about myself, but I will attempt to paint a quick picture of my history in paper-crafting and my passion for service. So here's a little bit about me...

One of my good friends took this picture of me, and I think it captures everything about my personality. I believe of in the pursuit of self-happiness as my way of life, and I achieve this most by working with others to positively affect the community.

I have intentionally pursued a career in the non-profit sector - I have worked in smaller, local non-profits; in the federal government; and now at an academic medical center. My current role provides me with the chance to create opportunities for our staff to engage in community service, and you can imagine how great it is to see your peers learning to use their skills to give back (and enjoying it!).

Paper-crafting, specifically scrapbooking, is a hobby I was introduced to about 10 years ago, and I have been hooked ever since (I'm sure you all can relate)!

It actually got to a point where I had so much inventory and so many requests for custom items, that I officially launched my own custom scrapbook company in 2007. I focus a lot of my work on ethnic and culturally specific items - a void I still see in the scrapbook market. I often have to create my own little embellishments to add that extra touch, but I love the challenge :)

Well, I hope that gives you a little insight into why I decided to actively take part in the work that Scrapbook Royalty does. I'm constantly amazed by the good deeds members are doing with a hobby I love.

I know that I will only continue finding ways to do more because of all the great work that you all share and I write about. So far, the biggest lesson I have learned is that it isn't too hard to start....you just need a creative spark!

Though I'm not on the West Coast, I'm super happy to represent Chicago and the Midwest and hope that I can creatively engage the talented individuals in my area! So watch out West Coast for I'm hoping to flood this blog with fun events we're having here!

Scrapbook Royalty/Charity Wings has two new blog writers!!!

Today we’ll talk about me, Christine Nay and Nubia can introduce herself later.

I live in Boise, Idaho, with my doggie, Chloe, and my cat, Tuxie. I love all types of crafting but now my favorite is cards and altered art. I love the vintage/shabby chic style but have been known to go with cute and fun sometimes. Check out my blog at Change of Heart Creations.

I met Elena and Sheila while at Brave Girls Camp in July and told them that I would like to volunteer for Scrapbook Royalty in a way that I could help through the internet since I don’t live near them. When they asked for a blog writer, I knew that was the spot for me. I was happy when they decided to have Nubia and I both write for the blog. She has been wonderful to work with; picking up the slack when I don’t have the time.

I have really enjoyed blogging for Scrapbook Royalty. Most of all, I like hearing about the wonderful women who are making Scrapbook Royalty a great organization, including the SR principals and other volunteers. The donors and the participants in the crops and other events are an integral part of the success of SR as well.

Nubia and I would love to have suggestions for craft related charity events that we could post on the blog. Any suggestions, please just drop us an email.

A weekend of Fun, Friendship and Fundraising!

Last weekend was the 2nd Annual 3Day Crop, it took place at the lovely Scrap Retreat House located in the French Valley area of Temecula. It was a location designed just for this type of event. At 11am the doors were opened to 12 wonderful ladies. The group included Liz Goldsberry, Helene Barnes, Cheryl Lindsay, Shannah Tenner, Ingrid Konupek, Bella Fontes, Terri Valdez, Laurie McCarthy, Teri Kincade, Beth Oliver, Bev Allaire, and Kathie Taylor.

Each of the participants have worked hard over the last 9 months to raise their donations! Collectively they raised over $17,000.00, with money still coming in! The money raised from this fundraiser will be going to support the Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Breast Cancer Foundation.

The group was treated to a wide range of surprises over the weekend, we had Cheryl McAdams coming in from Tattered Angels to do a make and take for them, and Laura Miller from Desert Scrapper's Retreats and Dove Chocolitiers stopped by with treats for the whole group! As well as a masseuse to ease those aches and pains from scrapping the weekend away.

Yvonne Ojeda, the Education Director from the Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen stopped by to talk with the ladies, I have to say, I think we shocked her a bit. We celebrated raising not only money for a great cause, but also the beginning of new friendships. The house was filled will joy and laughter all weekend long!

They also received a ton of goodies..,both handmade items and items donated from different companies. A big thank you needs to go out to Tattered Angels, Westcott, Making Memories, Maya Road, Cosmo Cricket, Mimi's Cafe and Chilis for their kind donations!

I have to take a moment and acknowledge the most wonderful of volunteers Aunt B, she is Terri Valdez's auntie and a 13 year Breast Cancer survivor. She is a cleaning maniac! I could not have done this event without her! This is her second year heading up the kitchen for us and I don't know what I would do if she wasn't there to keep us clean and on track!

It was so hard to leave at the end of the event...it was truly something I wanted to just go on and on and on! A huge thank you also needs to go to these wonderful women who participated in the event. They are truly amazing and my heroes!

Last week, I sheepishly put out a call for help in my first ever crafty friendraiser. Some of you have reached out about sending cards, and I greatly appreciate any help that may come our way.

I knew that I didn't want to wait too long to launch the friendraiser especially since the dance studio was holding a benefit mixer this weekend, so I reached out to a few friends and asked them to help me out.

We even got a novice to join us....he just wanted to do whatever he could do to support. So, of course, we put him to work!!!

In two days, our crew created over 340 cards and 30 sets of gift tags. We even had a friend donate some custom made shoe bags (for dance shoes).

So on Monday, we officially launched the friendraiser!!

On our first day, we raised $250!!

Here's hoping we knock that first figure out of the water and fast!

Additionally, I'm SUPER happy to share -- Elisa is officially out of the coma and seems to be on the path to recovery. May the prayers and great progress continue!

Mission Valentine

Archway and Operation Write Home are partnering to make sure that our service members have plenty of Valentine cards and cookies—sweets for sweets!

So your mission, if you decide to take it, is to make a few Valentine’s Day cards (using the guidelines below) and send them to one of the shippers. If you would like you children to craft along with you, have these put their name on the back and right a little message to the service member. That’s right, there cards will go directly to a war hero.

Valentine’s cards must be sent to your shipper by December 1. Christmas cards are already on their way to our service members so they can send them back home in time for Christmas.

Here are a few guidelines for making cards for the troops. Remember that these cards are for the express purpose of a service member to send to their family at home.

No glitter. Seriously. It's a hazard for our heroes, so we won't send cards with any glitter that will flake off the card. Read more.
A2 sized cards. Most efficient for our shipping dollars, so we strongly recommend A2 (4.25" x 5.5" - half a sheet of cardstock). Read more.
No store bought. Yep, pretty straightforward. Our heroes don't like them, so we send them our cards filled with love and creativity! Read more.
Watch the deadlines. We have to mail cards 5-6 weeks ahead of a holiday, so check out the deadlines posted on our homepage, on the left side. Those are the very last last last dates, so aim for a couple weeks earlier if at all possible, since we start shipping 8 weeks ahead.
Any quantity. One card to 100 to 500 — every card matters! We recommend quality over quantity...relax, do your best, and pour lots of love into each card!
Limit multiples. Some folks like to make a lot of one design. While that's fine, it becomes a big problem in one particular instance: holiday cards. If you want to make a lot of those (over 30), please send them 8 weeks ahead (or more). That allows us to mix them into the most boxes; we often end up with 100 of one design arriving the last week, and if most of those holiday boxes had already been sent in weeks prior, those multiples will have to wait until next year.
NEW: Do not violate copyright laws. If you use photography or illustrations on your cards, it must be your own, or you must have written permission to use them. We don't want OWH in trouble for copyright violation! This includes repurposing store bought cards or using art from magazines or books as a hero image on your card. Consult angel policies for your stamp manufacturers if you have questions on the usage of their images; this point is about using printed copyrighted images. [read more]
NEW: Have kids make AnyHero cards. When making cards with children, please have them make AnyHero cards. Most children have the want-to but not the able-to when it comes to making use-able cards that our heroes will want to write home on. There are a few exceptions, and you can get more on that here. NEW: Do not handwrite sentiments. If you don't have a sentiment stamp to go with your card, feel free to let it be a card with no sentiment. Do not handwrite sentiments outside or inside the cards. We've gotten some emails from heroes' spouses indicating a momentary panic when a card from their husband had a woman's handwriting on it - and we want to avoid even a second of angst for these dear spouses! A call for help from Chicago

Never did I imagine I would post a request for help from the members of this blog for something so personal, but I must. I think the universe has an unbelievable way of putting you in touch with people who need to be in your world at specific times.

Therefore, after seeing all the incredible work you all do, I hope you won't mind helping me out with this little request.

I want to introduce you all to a beautiful spirit named Elisa.

Besides scrapbooking, one of my other hobbies is Latin dancing (salsa, bachata, cha cha cha, etc), which is where I met Elisa.

A couple of weeks ago now, Elisa went into a coma unexpectedly from some serious health complications (as is always the case). Knowing that there is nothing more that I can do for her health besides pray and support her loved ones, I am still left feeling pretty helpless.

So, rather than focusing on a larger sized crafting for a cause event (as I had planned for in the Spring), I asked the dance studio if they would be okay with me setting up a bin with homemade cards. All proceeds from the cards sold would go directly to the family to at least help cover some of the medical bills.

And so, I have a call out to help me keep the bin full!

What kinds of cards can you make to donate:

- Get well cards (left blank on the inside)....people will then also be left with the option of addressing that card to Elisa so that we can deliver them to her at a later time.

A Glimmer of Gold

Allow us to introduce you to the amazing Liz Goldsberry, who is not only the very proud mama of Sheila, but also one of the amazing participants in the 3Day crop.

My daughter Sheila is the creative genius of this event and needless to say I am happy to support her endeavors in any way I can. And what better way than to participate in an event where I not only get to do something I really enjoy and raise funds for a cause very close to my heart.

As mentioned above, the 3Day crop holds a very special place in Liz's heart and it's only partly related to the fact that Sheila spearheaded it.

Sheila and I (my daughter Lisa lived too far away to assist) did home care for my mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 1989 and fought the good fight until December 1, 1995.

For seven years, Liz and Sheila participated in a 24 hour scrapping event that turned into a breast cancer fundraiser in its second year. I think we can only imagine the exhaustion that hits after 24 hours of scrapping! Whew....that's amazing, ladies!

Knowing of the exhaustion that this 24 hour event left on the body....why did Liz continue to participate?

By participating in these events, our lives have been enriched by the new friends we have made and the scrapbooking community as a whole.....[and] I know the funds will not only go to research but also to help cancer patients (women and men alike) in all phases of their treatment from mammograms to helping pay their bills when they are not capable of doing so themselves.

And is fundraising difficult for Liz? Not anymore!

She boasts of an almost fool proof method to raise funds that she has perfected over the past decade (that sentence alone is unbelievable!).

I mail out letter to everyone on my Christmas card list (and everyone at work) and enclose a self-addressed envelope.

And no donation is too small or too large. Giving is giving...and every little bit donated has easily helped her raise $2,000.00 each year.

So after giving back what should amount to almost $20,000 in a decade (yup, you read that right), what project does Liz hope to concentrate on at the 3Day crop?

I am a Scrapbooker and plan to use the time at the 3Day Crop to finish the book of our 44,000 mile roadtrip to Chicago (come back so I can meet you Liz!) and back in July and August for CHA.

And based on what I've learned so far.....Liz absolutely deserves a chance to relish in her fun roadtrips and memories.

Congratulations on another successful and inspiring year of fundraising, Liz!

The Season of Sharing

During the holiday season, we will be sharing ways that you can share the spirit of the season to help those in need.

First up is an organization that I just heard about, Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is operated by Samaritan’s Purse International Relief an organization that offers emergency relief, community development and vocational programs to impoverished people all over the world.

Operation Christmas Child collects shoe boxes filled with toys and supplies to be sent to children all over the world. Last year they serviced 8 million children in 180 countries. How can I help, you ask?

First, choose boy or girl and an age category. Then pack a shoe box full of gifts including toys, school supplies and personal items such as candy, t-shirts, jewelry, toothbrush, soap, etc. Next, include a check for at $7.00 to cover postage.

After you get your shoebox packed, you can drop it off at one of several drop off locations or you can mail it to Samaritan’s Purse. The drop off locations are open the week of November 15-22. Of course, this is just one of many organizations that you can donate to during the holiday season. We will be back with more ideas!!!

The 3-Day Crop Meets Helene Barnes

I would love for you to meet Helene Barnes.

Helene decided to participate in the 3-Day Crop because she watched a friend’s mother battle breast cancer going from a vibrant, energetic woman to a beaten down lady and back to the beautiful woman she once was. Helene decided to attend this event because she could combine her passion for scrapbooking with raising money for such a worthwhile organization—a win win situation. She doesn’t want to sit back and watch another woman suffer.

Helene has begged, borrowed and almost stolen to raise her money for the 3-Day Crop. I say almost stolen because she works for her local city police. She sent an email to her agencies entire email list asking for donations. She hosted a silent auction at a scrapbook event in Palm Springs where she put together eight baskets containing some fun scrappy supplies that she donated herself. Then to finish up, she went from desk to desk asking for donations!!! What a gal!

She has attended other events hosted by Susan G. Komen and has raised $10,000 to date. WOW! I sit in awe!!!

Great ideas for future causes

A friend of mine posted this link on facebook, and I knew I had to pass it along to everyone here. These agencies could be great options for a smaller craft for a cause event!

Mashable.com compiled a list of "Buy One, Give One" projects. What does this mean exactly....well, when you buy an item the company sends you one and then also donates one. The options and organizations are great -- and the donations range from local to global!

If you don't have time to take part in anything before the holidays and are still looking for little ways to make a difference (I know we all do what we can), these agencies might be a great option!

Also, you could double your impact by raising funds to purchase the items, and then rather than keeping what was sent - you donate to a local agency!

Super TERI-fic!!!!

Today's 3Day Crop participant introduction is for the super TERI-fic, Teri Kincaid!

Teri has joined the challenge to raise funds benefiting the Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

Her heart pulled her to the event after having volunteered with other Scrapbook Royalty events in the past. She not only had a great time meeting Sheila, Elena and Liz, she also knew that her participation in those events really benefited some incredible causes.

When the chance came to take part in a 3Day crop for breast cancer, Teri knew this was an event she could not and would not pass up.

I am doing this for my grandmother who is a Breast Cancer survivor, myself who once had a breast cancer scare and all the daughters who may one day get this. I want to help find a cure...I have had to work my tail off to raise this money, and I pray I am teaching my children that life is not just about self, it's about giving back to others.

She also jokingly told us that she hopes the funds she raises help find a cure...well, that they support the scientific research that ultimately finds the cure. Way to put it into perspective, Teri! One never knows if that very next dollar bill will do exactly what you dream of.....so keep asking for more!!!

Though close to reaching her minimum goal of $2000...Teri really hopes to raise close to $3000!!!!!

I still need people's donations so if you have a few extra dollars or don't mind skipping a Starbucks run or two so you can donate, I would be very grateful.

However, don't even think that Teri hasn't been hustling to reach her goals. She's been very creative....check out her many fundraising activities (definitely some out-of-the-box thinking!):

Hosted a Bunco night where she gave out prizes donated by local restaurants.
Sent and RESENT donation letters - Persistence should never be underestimated!
Helped host a Pat and Oscars fundraiser night with Beth Oliver and distributed fliers all over Temecula for the vent.
Sold goody bags filled with great scrapbook prizes at the Dessert Scrappers week end retreat
Garage sales
Cupcakes sale - 2 of the cupcakes made were rainbow on the inside and, if chosen, resulted in a prize for the cupcake eater :)
Donated two raffle baskets to another Dessert Scrappers weekend retreat - raised over $100

An avid crafter of all-kinds (check out her etsy store sold section), Teri expects to spend the 3Day crop working on her kids' albums. Though further behind than she would like to be (I think we can all relate to this statement) she knows it will be nice to reminisce in the memories.

Since volunteering to be one of the newest blog authors for Scrapbook Royalty, I've spent a significant amount of time looking at old posts and marvelling at all of your work (the readers and participants).

So I'm announcing today...

I've literally just sent an email to a few of my friends to discuss what we want to do, when, and what cause we want to focus on.

As promised, here is another sneak peek at one of the INKREDIBLE participants of the 3Day crop benefiting the Inland Empire Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

Today, we are happy to introduce Cheryl Lindsay, a talented needle-crafting artist who has joined the challenge to raise the required funds to participate in the 3Day crop. We highly recommend taking a peek at her blog, Cherlin Ink, to view some of the samples of her unbelievable work.

Not only is Cheryl inspiring as an artist, she's also a

seven year breast cancer survivor!

Outside of the obvious personal reasons for taking part in this multi-day crop, Cheryl states that she hopes her donated funds will be used to support the living needs of current breast cancer survivors.

To date, Cheryl has raised about half of her committed donation, but the donations are still coming in! She's achieved great fundraising success by taking part in a silent auction and by sending out donation letters with a self-addressed stamped enveloped. If you can help Cheryl reach her goal, please don't hesitate to contact her via her etsy shop and/or blog!

Though we described Cheryl as a talented needle-crafting artist, she has been paper-crafting since she was a child and has a particular passion for altered art. Can't wait to see what she creates at the 3Day Crop.

We had a Blast at Scrapbook Expo!

10. Fantastic Make and Takes…if you want to try new techniques and supplies before you buy them, the expo is the best place to try them out and take home fun handmade items that you’ve made!

9. Prizes galore! They were calling out names and numbers all weekend long!

8. Great selection of vendors this year…everything from $1.00 stores to the glitziest glitter I’ve seen in years. This stuff was so awesome and they had so many pretty colors! I want them all!!!

7. Elena had Canon Printers at the crops both nights, you could print photos to your heart's content! as well as the flip-pal mobile scanner- she got to scan boobies in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month! hee hee!

6. Each of the crops had unbelievable vendor bargains you could not get on the Expo floor! My personal fave was the 7 sets of Thickers for $10.00, oh yeah baby!!

5. Awesome raffles both nights at the crop hosted by Charity Wings. The vendors were very generous, we had incredible items up for grabs!

4. We raised almost $1,000.00 for The Pink-Link.org, which is an organization that links people who are under going treatment for Breast Cancer to others who are under going the same treatment.

3. Charity Wings had a cute but creepy booth! We featured our exclusive Creepy Cutie from Queen Kat Designs in a creepy but cute make and take! We still have just a few of our Bat Princess Stamps available; they are $6.99 plus shipping.

2. We raffled off a brand new Cricut Imagine and 2 Cricut Cartridges and raised over $1300.00 to help support our organization! Our winner of the packaged valued at close $700.00 was so excited!

1. And the #1 reason to come out to the next Scrapbook Expo is to see old friends and make new friends! We had such a great time talking to folks who came by to visit during the 2 days we were there, we can’t wait for the next one…hope to see you there!

Introducing Kathleen Taylor

A year after losing her sister to Breast Cancer in 2006, Kathleen participated in a 24 hour event with Sheila Goldsberry and was inspired to challenge herself to take part in this year's 3Day Crop.

With a commitment to raise a minimum of $2000, Kathleen hopes that her participation and funds will help raise awareness and be a part of the financial capstone to finding the cure.

“I’ve learned that if you stick to it, all things are possible.”

Having now scrapbooked for over 5 years and spending way more money than she ever expected in supplies for this great hobby (we can all relate with that statement), Kathleen looks forward to working on an album celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary while also donating funds to this very important issue.

What clearly has a personal family tie for her will also result in a celebration of her family. Here's hoping Kathleen spends the 3 days sharing the stories of her incredible marriage and her courageous sister with the other participants.

We discussed the AMAZING Westcott Titanium NON-STICK scissors. Everyone who has them...loves them! Every Crafter should have a pair!
How the money we raise for the Wyland Foundation, help Wyland go to the gulf and film a documentary about the tragic effects of the oil spill.
We talked about other Charity's Marisa has been helping. Also everyday people she has been helping with making there life a happy one with the love of crafting. She is an amazing woman and it was a pleasure to have her with us tonight.
